Gary Gapen works primarily with adolescents, adults, and families using individual, education, and group therapy to address the issues of addiction and recovery. He provides AODA evaluations and assessments for schools, the criminal justice system, attorneys and employers, as well as for individuals and parents. Gary works with many different aspects of ADDICTION: alcohol, drugs, medication, gambling, video gaming, internet, nicotine, sexual, day trading and other compulsive behaviors. A part of Gary's caseload focuses on impaired drivers (OMVI/DWI) and working with individuals to complete the counseling requirements for their Chapter 20 Driver Safety Plans.
He has worked with individuals struggling with addictive behavior and thinking for 42 years of his professional career. He has worked in both inpatient and outpatient treatment facilities, helping his clients recognize and learn strategies to reach their recovery goals.
Gary assists clients in focusing on the basics of health and wellness to provide a base for obtaining and maintaining their recovery. He uses techniques of Motivational Interviewing, Rational Behavioral Therapy, and supportive counseling. Changes can often be difficult to make and Gary feels that enjoyment and humor are important, so he keeps a focus on helping clients find fun and pleasure in the changes they need to make. He encourages and assists his clients in the development of healthy community recovery support systems that may include family, co-workers, friends, 12 step meetings (AA, NA, GA), Church, sports and social organizations. Gary makes referrals for psychiatric and medication evaluations when appropriate.
